Guatemala Day One & Two

Day One & Two 10/14/17 & 10/15/17 – Written by Susie Awalt; Photography by Ranjani Agrawal Day one of the Austin Smiles Medical Mission trip began on October 14th, 2017. We gathered at 3:30 am for a 5 am departure to Guatemala City with doctors, nurses, and support staff to provide surgical services to children whom are otherwise unable to get treatment. Specifically we are focused on cleft lip/palate operations, as well as ENT procedures. Day  2 Sunday October 15th began at the Moore Center which is supported by the Shalom Foundation. Average travel time for families and patients is 1-2 hours, some as long as 5-6 hours.

Veracruz 2017, Follow Up

Now that I am back from the trip it has taken me a couple of days to digest what exactly happened and the impact it made on my life. Thinking back to last week it seems like a beautiful dream. There was no way to take in every tear and every smile, I would have been an emotional wreck if I had. Today is different, I can finally look back and shed some tears thinking of the way my small part played in the big picture.   I have taken these days back to really hone in on this amazing experience. I can still feel the suns heat kissing my skin and the breeze coming from the ocean a couple of blocks from the hospital.
