Austin Smiles Puebla Trip 2014

Day 6-7: Puebla 2014 – Mission Complete! One of our RN team members said it best, “Puebla. Fantastic people, long hot OR days, mole galore, really old pyramids, ornate churches, steaming volcanoes, artistic talavera, and some fun nights to name a few highlights. Most importantly 28 smiles improved and so many more lives touched. Gracias Puebla!” – Joey Rogers 2014. We left off with our 75-year old friend, Samuel. He looks great and can’t wait to grow his mustache back! His family, who’s finding out one-by-one after his surgery, is in for a BIG surprise because they had no idea it even took place. The Austin Smiles team was in tears of joy as we presented Samuel to his wife, granddaughter, and daughter for the first time after surgery. Samuel is a funny guy and finally has a completed smile that he’ll be showing off for the rest of his days. On the Austin Smiles missions you receive a “Free Day”! It is the last day of the trip and it’s...

Day 6: Part A A story about an old man… “We get to go tell this guy that he just won the lottery.” Samuel Mitl Lozano is a 75-year-old man from the pueblo of San Sabastian Tepalcatepec in San Pedro, Cholula. He’s been married for 52 years and has five children. Samuel was born with a cleft lip. On Monday, Samuel brought his wife to Hospital General de Cholula to seek medical attention for her knee. Traveling with them was their granddaughter, Yanelly, who assists them when dealing with the hospital’s administration. Our very own, Martha Mashburn, was walking through the hospital when she noticed the old man’s face. Martha quickly and excitedly reached out to our team to inquire about him as another potential patient. After a quick assessment with the medical team, we received approval to bring Samuel up to take a look and see if he’d qualify for the surgery. Was he healthy enough? Would he be...

Day 5: To give a quick update on our little crayon eater, Jesus was able to make it into surgery yesterday and did great. He’ll be heading home today. The team had nine surgeries on the schedule and started extra early to get them all knocked out. Everyone was prepared for what was expected to be the longest day of the trip, but we ended up flying though the operations. Today’s patients were all rockstars and in high spirits… everything went smoothly and all nine are resting comfortably in post-op. We’ve included a before and after picture of one of our patients, Emmanuel. AUSTIN SMILES #smilepuebla14

Austin Smiles Puebla Trip 9/30/14: Part B

A little story about Brayan… Our very first patient out of surgery was a little 5-year-old boy from Atempan, Puebla named Brayan. He arrived on Sunday for triage with an elderly woman who identified herself as his mother. Brayan loved stickers and quickly won the hearts of our team… although, we noticed that Brayan did not like to be away from his mother at all and constantly held her within arms length. Brayan’s surgery went great and he was sent up to post-op for recovery. Our fellow RN and translator, Melissa Reyes, cared for the young boy and his mother and would even sneak snacks for the elderly woman to eat. The poor woman patiently waited in a chair throughout the day and night caring for her son… As Melissa gained her trust, Brayan’s mother opened up a bit more about the boy. She was actually not his mother, but his grandmother and had taken over caring for the child...
