Providing a Continuum of Care
Contrary to popular belief, children who are born with cleft lip and/or palate may need multiple surgeries and services in their adolescence depending on the severity of their cleft. Although the first surgery on the lip is the most visibly transformational, a continuum of care is necessary to keep children healthy as they grow. Early surgeries focus on mitigating or eliminating the associated fundamental eating, hearing, breathing, and speech problems. Into adulthood, children born with cleft lip and palate may need further dental care, palate revisions, jaw surgery, rhinoplasty’s, or other secondary operations.
