Teamwork

When the Austin Smiles team returns to the U.S., Guatemalan medical professionals will continue providing care for patients who underwent procedures during the mission. Here, with the aid of two translators, Dr. David Wainwright consults with Guatemalan plastic surgeon Dr. Julio Sagastume.

On Tuesday, Dr. Wainwright and Dr. Erika Sato performed an Abbe flap procedure on six-year-old Flor Lopez, during which they transferred the skin, muscle and mucosa of the central part of the lower lip to the upper lip, forming a bridge between the lips. In three weeks, Dr. Sagastume will perform a procedure that divides the tissue.
