Interning with AS – Passionate Impact
By Ximena P.
Hello! My name is Ximena Perez, and I am currently a senior at the University of Texas at Austin, majoring in Human Development and Family Sciences. With a strong passion for working with children, my ultimate goal is to become a pediatric doctor.
As my internship with Austin Smiles concludes in the summer of 2024, I can confidently reflect on the diverse tasks I’ve undertaken and the valuable guidance I’ve received from Renee, Juanita, and my fellow interns. I have had the opportunity to assist with a range of tasks, including translating and communicating essential pre-trip and post-trip information to patient families. This experience has underscored the crucial role of donations in sustaining the operations of Austin Smiles, highlighting the significant impact of support from local businesses in funding our medical missions. I have thoroughly enjoyed collaborating with various companies to secure donations and ensure effective communication of details. Additionally, I have gained practical experience in collecting donations and delivering medical supplies to hospitals. Connecting with individuals who share a passion for helping others has been incredibly fulfilling.
Throughout my time at Austin Smiles, I have also developed a deeper understanding of the financial aspects of a non-profit organization by updating budgets and tracking expenditures for medical missions. Providing comprehensive care, from surgery to post-operative support, ensures that children experience a smooth process with a supportive system at every stage.
Working with Austin Smiles has been a remarkable experience, and I am eager to apply the knowledge and skills I have gained to continue supporting children with cleft lip and palate. I am deeply grateful for this opportunity and look forward to the future with optimism.
