The Need
One in seven hundred babies are born with cleft lip and/or palate. Children born with this condition often face one or more of these health problems: failure to thrive, feeding/eating difficulties, speech & language development, and breathing & hearing impairments. Children born with this condition often experience social and emotional issues related to stigma, ridicule, and feelings of isolation.
OUR LOCAL IMPACT: Austin Smiles Central Texas Cleft Community provides no-cost wraparound care to over 800 patients from Dell Children’s Medical Center and other providers. We offer referrals, special needs assistance, parent advocacy and education. Our social and emotional programming is designed to uplift caregivers and provide inclusive, empowering opportunities for children to interact with their peers. All services are offered in both English and Spanish.
OUR INTERNATIONAL IMPACT: Austin Smiles transforms the lives of over 150 children annually, with the help of some of the best medical professionals from Central Texas and around the world. Children served are lower income and have limited access to professional, no-cost surgeries. We work closely with Latin American communities and host country hospitals to provide a continuum of care with long lasting impact. Annual medical mission trips create a sustainable service delivery model designed to treat patients as they age into adulthood. Our life changing services help children live more productive, inclusive, and fulfilling lives.
