James “Jim” Cullington first came to Austin in 1981 and shortly thereafter helped start the Austin Plastic Surgery Society, serving as its president. He began his service with the underserved and volunteered his time at the Cleft Palate Clinic at Brackenridge Hospital, originally founded by Dr. Rick Parker. After travelling to Africa to begin a burn center, Jim returned with the idea to start Austin Smiles along with fellow plastic surgeons, Dr. Jim Fox and Dr. Pat Beckham. Dr. Cullington has been on over 30 medical mission trips with Austin Smiles and has served as Chair of the Board of Directors as well as an Austin Smiles board member for many of the 30 years since its founding. Jim’s guiding principle has always been to offer services where needed regardless of any reward and to treat all patients to the best of his ability regardless of ability to pay. Jim is proud of the Austin community of doctors, nurses, surgical technicians, support staff, and countless volunteers for being so generous of their time and deed for Austin Smiles.
