  • offering financial assistance on a a case-by-case basis to patients in need
  • sponsoring cleft patients to attend “Camp Amigo,” a weekend overnight camp where participants enjoy outdoor activities, team-building exercises, and socializing with other young Texans affected by cleft lip and/or palate
  • coordinating and funding social events throughout the year to bring fun and fellowship to patients and families

About the Cleft Team

The Dell Children’s Craniofacial and Reconstructive Plastic Surgery Center offers quality treatment in a positive, healing place and provides a practice environment in which healthcare providers can collaborate in new and exciting ways. The multidisciplinary cleft team meets weekly to diagnose, discuss, and develop treatment plans for individual patients.

The first visit may start with counseling even before a patient is born, and continues through childhood and into adulthood. At the team visit, families meet with the plastic surgeon, orthodontist, speech therapist, and pediatric dentist.

The nurse coordinator ensures a smooth path for every patient, from diagnosis through treatment. The craniofacial pediatrician addresses complex medical conditions that may be present. The social worker ensures that families are connected to vital resources and to each other.

As patients are followed over the years, data is collected to study their long-term growth. By analyzing this data, the team can improve existing treatments and develop new ones, keeping the Center on the forefront of care for children and adolescents.

About Camp Amigo

Each year, Austin Smiles funds “Camp Amigo,” a fun-filled weekend at Camp for All. Located between Houston and Austin in Washington County, Camp for All provides Camp Amigo a unique camping experience that gives young people born with cleft lip/palate the chance for participants to be themselves, make friends, and have a great time with fellow cleft lip/palate patients. Activities are facilitated by camp counselors with members of the Dell Children’s cleft team and valuable volunteers from Austin Smiles close by to keep campers safe and ensure campers feel included and supported. The next Camp Amigo will take place March 23-265, 2018.
